What is DACUM?

Developing a Curriculum (DACUM) is a job analysis method that uses the wisdom of high-performing workers to record various details about a job. This process requires its participants to gather in a room and carry out a series of brainstorming discussions, storyboard the duties and tasks being identified and develop a DACUM profile.

Given how extensively useful a DACUM workshop is, it is surprising that it is rarely promoted as one of the most effective job analysis tools. It is based on the key principle that the work involved in a job role is best described by the expert workers who are performing on that line of duty in the industry.


Who are DACUM participants?

The DACUM method involves a number of participants:

  1. Expert workers: A panel of 5-12 workers who are on-the-job experts
  2. Recorder: A person who jots down the essential duties and tasks being discussed
  3. Coordinator: An organizer who arranges the DACUM workshop and carries out pre- and post-workshop activities
  4. Facilitator: A person who supervises and leads the group through the whole process


What are the steps in the DACUM Process?

A high-level overview of the DACUM process includes:

Step 1: Introduction and Orientation

All members introduce themselves to build familiarity with the process participants. The facilitator then starts by providing a brief orientation to the DACUM process. A sample DACUM chart is also shared with the panelists so that they understand what the process output will look like.

Step 2: Initial Brainstorming Session

The facilitator then leads the group towards an initial discussion about their job role where they discuss possible job titles within the role, who supervises them and who they supervise, and the major areas of the work that they perform.

Step 3: Storyboarding Duties and Tasks

Once the contextual and broader scope of the job role is analyzed, the discussion moves to job duties and tasks. Duty is defined as the major responsibility carried out by the worker and its containing tasks are the activities that are performed to fulfill that duty.

As duties and tasks are being identified by the expert workers, they are written down by the recorder as statements on cutout cards which are then stuck on the wall ahead. This approach helps the team to visualize the content in a storyboarding manner.

Step 4: Identifying Worker Skills and Competencies

Once all the duties and tasks are listed, the facilitator then moves the group discussion to identify the skills, knowledge, behaviors, attitude, and personality traits that are required to be demonstrated by the worker on the job. This also involves considering any tools and equipment handling requirements, physical labor demands, discussing future concerns and trends, etc.

Step 5: Reorganize, Review and Validate

The process then proceeds to the final step where all identified information is organized and reviewed. The facilitator verifies that the DACUM chart produced includes all major areas of the job under analysis and the duty and task titles are well-stated.

The prepared DACUM profile presents all the facts and information about a job role which helps educational institutes in developing curriculum for their students.
